Reasons You Should Be Celebrating Christmas in Dahlonega, GA

The Christmas season is all about sipping hot cocoa, marveling at all the festive lights, singing carols, and honoring other special family traditions. But if your neighborhood tends to lack in holiday spirit, don’t fret. Instead, just book yourself a trip to this quaint town in northern Georgia.

Dahlonega, Georgia (population 6,437) is the best place to celebrate Christmas in the South. With tons of special events, gorgeous light displays, and holiday shopping events going on throughout the entire month of December, it’s a must-visit holiday destination.

This year, Dahlonega’s Old Fashioned Christmas festival kicks off on November 23 and features at least one event almost every day until Christmas. While you can check out the entire lineup at the Visitor’s Bureau blog, here are some standouts you shouldn’t miss if you visit.

Lighting Downtown Ceremony

During this annual event, you’ll cheer and applaud along with the locals when you see thousands of holiday lights blink on all at once, all over town. This year’s ceremony takes place on November 23 at 6 p.m.

Old Fashioned Christmas Parade

On the first Saturday of December, the town celebrates the arrival of the most wonderful time of the year with a jubilant parade featuring music, floats, and of course, a visit from Santa.

Christmas Tree Lighting

Why stand with droves of people in Rockefeller Plaza when you can get the same magical experience on a more intimate level in this friendly town? Your eyes will light up when you see the 30-foot tree come alive with colorful bulbs.

Christmas Market on Candy Cane Lane

It just doesn’t get more Christmas-y than this! Stop by this arts and crafts market during the first weekend of December.

Visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus

You can find the season’s most famous couple roaming around town and snapping photos with guests at the Visitors’ Center Plaza every weekend.

Christmas Concerts and Entertainment

With live performances by jazz bands, choirs, orchestras, and carolers (many of which, are free), there’s bound to be an event you’ll enjoy somewhere in town. You can also check out the Christmas Belles revue at the Historic Holly Theatre.
